south dakota state capitol
The South Dakota State Capitol, located at 500 East Capitol Avenue in Pierre, is a historic building that serves as the seat of government for the state. Constructed between 1905 and 1910, it is a fine example of Renaissance Revival architecture, designed by the Minneapolis firm of Bell & Detweiler. The Capitol is not only a working government building but also a symbol of the state's history and its commitment to the future. Visitors can explore the building's beautiful terrazzo floors, grand marble staircase, and the rotunda with its 96-foot-high dome adorned with images of the Tree of Life, symbolizing wisdom and longevity. The Capitol grounds are also home to a time capsule, sealed in 2010, to be opened in the year 2110, marking the building's bicentennial celebration.
