dilmun burial mounds

The Dilmun Burial Mounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bahrain, are ancient necropolis sites from the Early Dilmun civilization, dating between 2200 and 1750 BCE. Comprising around 11,774 burial mounds, including cylindrical low towers and elaborate two-story royal sepulchral towers, they reflect a sophisticated burial tradition tied to Bahrain’s role as a thriving trade hub. These mounds, varying in size and complexity, showcase unique architectural features like alcove-equipped chambers and provide insight into the social hierarchy of the time. Recognized in 2019, they stand as a testament to one of the world’s largest prehistoric cemeteries.
